Des Moines Electrical Inspection

Is the electrical system in your Des Moines home up to date and able to safely handle your modern lifestyle? If you haven’t had an electrician to your home lately, you may want to consider doing so as a prevention strategy. This way, you can find issues before they develop into serious problems. As homes age, wiring frays and connections loosen. New appliances can strain the system. It’s important to have electricians to your home for routine maintenance. Check out our post below to see the results of a recent Des Moines electrical inspection completed by the team here at Integra Electrical, and the safety upgrades that followed.

Old Home Electrical Safety

Des Moines Electrical Inspection

This old home contained a multitude of out-of-date electrical systems that now posed a hazard to the family. The first thing we did was install new electrical grounding rods by the main panel to secure a grounded connection. The basement contained several live hanging wires, including a junction wire that was hanging behind the furnace.

Knob & Tube Rewiring

Knob and tube wiring was the standard way to wire homes in the past, but is not equipped to handle the electric currents of a modern lifestyle. This Des Moines electrical inspection revealed both live and dead knob and tube wiring all throughout the attic, which needed to be removed and rewired and new circuits were run to the attic.

GFCI, AFCI & USB Outlets

Des Moines Electrical Inspection

GFCI outlets are designed to protect against electric shock and are essential in rooms with water, such as a kitchen or bathroom. During this Des Moines electrical inspection, we replaced all existing basement outlets with GFCI outlets to keep the family safe, especially in the case of a leak or flood in the basement.

AFCI outlets protect against heat caused by electrical arcing, which can lead to electrical fire. In addition to AFCI outlet installation, we also installed AFCI breakers, which are now legally required in the installation of most new homes. For safety purposes, AFCI breakers are required in existing homes whenever a new circuit or outlet is installed, so we added them in all bedrooms, living rooms and rooms with newly altered circuits.

This Des Moines home was also modernized with new USB outlets in the bedrooms to conveniently charge electronics.

Electrical Switch Updates For Lighting & Fans

Des Moines Electrical Inspection

Des Moines Electrical Inspection

Des Moines Electrical Inspection

One major sign of outdated home electrical wiring is switches that do not efficiently control the rooms lights and fans. For example, if you can flip a switch to turn a plugged-in lamp off and can now no longer use the additional plug to charge your phone with unless you flip the switch back on, it may be time for an update. New lighting was installed in this Des Moines home’s bedrooms, controlled independently by new switches that are not connected to power outlets.

Two stacked switches were installed to control the new outdoor lighting and kitchen light/ceiling fan combo. Stacked switches have two switches that allow the electrical elements to be controlled independently. This family can now flip one switch to turn on their kitchen light, and flip the other switch on the stack to turn on the fan. This way, they can easily choose between the light and the fan for occasions where they do not need to use both.

Home Surge Protection

Des Moines Electrical Inspection

We concluded this Des Moines electrical inspection by recommending home surge protection installation. Home surge protection blocks surges caused by malfunctioning appliances, outdated wiring, tripped circuit breakers, damaged power lines and even lightning strikes from entering the circuits within your home. When power surges within the home, a larger-than-normal amount of electricity enters the electrical system and everything hooked up to it. Power surges will damage or destroy expensive devices and appliances, and can even cause electrical fires if they are severe enough.

3 Ways That Dimmers Can Save You Time and Money

3 Ways That Dimmers Can Save You Time and Money

All About Dimmers

Integra Electrical

Home maintenance can add up in costs, and it can be difficult to cut down on your utility bills. Emergencies can happen at any time, and appliances simply aren’t built to last forever. The good news is that there are a few tricks every homeowner can use to save money and keep your home in tip-top shape. Most probably don’t think of their home’s lighting as a way to cut down on costs, but dimmers can save you money. Your home’s lighting can not only be energy efficient, but customizable and cozy.

How Dimmers Can Help Your Home

You might not think it, but the quality of lighting can increase your home’s value and comfort tremendously. Installing dimmers adds a variety of different lighting settings to your home to save money and add ambiance. Like any electrical appliance, however, your lighting is complicated and it can be difficult to get just the right amount of lighting. Dimmers give you that trial and error without having to have a licensed electrician replace and install multiple light fixtures. If you’re considering adding some dimmers to your home, here’s how a few dimmers can help you.

  • You save money. Dimmers are economic in that they consume considerably less energy when you dim the lights. Traditional light switches only give you the option of shutting off a light or turning it on, which means either you use 0% energy or 100%. A dimmer switch gives you full control of how much energy you want to use in a light switch, which can decrease your utility bills, saving $30 a year.
  • Your light bulbs last longer. On top of consuming less energy, a home with dimmers means fewer trips to the hardware store to replace your light bulbs. Generally the less light is used, the longer the bulb lasts.
  • They provide a variety of lighting. Besides saving money, the best perk of a dimmer is flexibility. Installing dimmers to your lighting enables you to adjust different light fixtures in your rooms for different effects. Dimmers are also easy to use because they can be programmed to change at certain times or controlled with an app or touch screen. Whether you want to accentuate some art, add ambiance, or sleep a little better at night, dimmers help to make that happen.

What You Need to Know About Dimmers

Dimmers not only improve your home’s quality of lighting, but they also come in a variety of switches and can add different effects to each room. While it might be tempting to try and install a dimmer switch on your own, your lighting is complicated, and best left to a licensed electrician to install. If you’re ready to upgrade your home’s lighting, there are a few important factors to consider first.

  • The type of switch. A dimmer is not only flexible for your home’s lighting; it’s also flexible in what type of switch you can use to adjust the lighting. An integrated switch, for example, allows you to create multiple lighting presets for one room which is controlled either by a button in the wall or a wireless controller. There are touch dimmer switches that are controlled with a simple tap of your finger and some can even switch back to a prior light setting. For something less sophisticated, there are manual switches like a slider or a rotary switch, which allow you to manually adjust the lighting.
  • The type of dimmer. You can also decide how complex you want your lighting control setup to be. A single-pole dimmer controls the dimming and lighting for all your home’s light fixtures. Three-way or four-way dimmers are used for light fixtures to be controlled by one dimmer switch with additional on and off switches. Multi-location dimmers enable you to use multiple dimmer switches to control multiple dimmers.
  • What you want in each room. It’s important to remember that dimmers not only save you money but offer a variety of uses for each room. Having dimmers in the bathroom, for example, allows you to turn down the lights first thing in the morning for your light-sensitive eyes. Dimmers are especially best for bedrooms as the dimmed light helps prepare your body to wind down for sleep. Kitchens which can be a popular room to hang out can benefit from dimmer lights, as good lighting makes for a good-looking kitchen, which saves you money and adds curb appeal. Even outdoor lighting benefit from a dimmer switch, especially when you need a little extra light in the evenings.

Your Home Deserves Better Lighting

Saving money is tough, especially when it’s time to pay the utility bill, but installing dimmers is one helpful trick that benefits homeowners. Dimmers add a nice variety of lighting for decoration and ambiance for comfort and help cut down on utility costs. Upgrading your home’s lighting, however, is best left to a licensed electrician, who not only can help you pick a dimmer that will work best for your home, but ensure your new lighting is installed safely. Call an electrician today and get the best lighting your home deserves.

5 Signs Your Generator Needs a Repair in Iowa

5 Signs Your Generator Needs a Repair in Iowa

  • Electrical

With winter storms on the way, it’s a good idea to get some way of keeping your power on. One of the best ways to do this is by installing a standby generator. However, owning a generator is a big responsibility, and you’ll need to care for it. Failing to care for it might mean you won’t get power when you need it most. Experts suggest calling to repair your Iowa home’s generator once or twice a year. However, you may need to call for repairs sooner if you notice any of these warning signs.

Here are five signs you should call us to help you with generator repair for your Iowa home:

Leaking and puddles

When generators get old, they can sometimes develop leaking problems and leak gasses or fluids. These leaks are bad for your generator and can be safety hazards depending on what’s leaking. Give us a call if you notice any strange puddles or the generator is leaking.

Visible damage

It’s no surprise that a damaged-looking generator needs repairs. Your generator should look fine for the first several years of its lifespan. However, falling branches, bad weather, and more are all capable of damaging the generator. Any sort of damaged wiring, water damage, or cracks/dents are worthy of a professional evaluation. Even small dents can cause critical damage to something inside your generator.

General alerts

Unless you work with it often, you likely won’t notice if your generator is damaged. Fortunately, some modern generators run weekly automatic self-tests and notify you if they have a problem. However, it’s also possible you’ll just have to do the test yourself. The generator manufacturer’s instructions should tell you when and how to get their products inspected. You can tweak their instructions to better suit your generator’s usage and needs.

Non-functional electrical components

When inspecting your generator, it’s important to ensure that the electrical components are working properly. A single non-functional component is capable of preventing your generator from working when you need it.

Slow starts

Standby generators start up right when the grid’s power goes out. That means you want little to no delay when the generator starts. When there is a noticeable delay, it’s usually because of engine and battery problems. Battery problems can be especially nasty because they can cause further damage to your generator’s engine if untreated.

5 Signs Your Home Needs Switch and Plug Repair

5 Signs Your Home Needs Switch and Plug Repair

  • Electrical
switch and plug repair in Iowa by Integra

The switches, plugs, and outlets in your home act as a connection between the electrical system and you. However, they get frequent use and thus are subject to a lot of wear and tear. When these get worn down, they become more than an inconvenience, but a danger. The chance of electrical shocks or fires are something you shouldn’t ignore. You’ll need to call professional electricians to help you with your home’s switch and plug repair. The big question, however, is how to tell when your switches and plugs need repairs.

Here are five signs that you should call for switch and plug repair:

Broken faceplates

As you use your plugs and switches, you might wind up wearing down the faceplate. When it gets damaged, it can expose bits of the wiring behind the plate. Even the smallest crack can open you up to dangerous electrical arcing when you flip the switch or plug something in.

Warm or burnt plastic

When a cover feels warm or has the look or smell of something burnt, you may have a serious issue. When internal contacts or wire terminals deteriorate, they can heat up and cause burning behind the cover. This can be very hazardous, capable of shocking you, melting more of the cover, and starting a house fire. If you see these signs, shut off the circuit breaker for that outlet or switch and call us as soon as you can!

Noisy switches

Faulty light switches can make a wide variety of buzzing noises. It might just be a loose wire connection, but it may also be a worn or defective switch that needs replacing. However, dimmer switches can also cause certain light bulbs buzz as the filament structure vibrates. Try experimenting with different types and brands of bulbs before you make any major repairs in that case.

Ungrounded outlets

As we mentioned before, outlets with only two-prong holes don’t have any grounding. Outlets with three holes can protect your home from power surges by grounding the charge into the earth. Using those outdated outlets can put you and your home’s electrical system at risk. If you still have two-holed outlets, call us to modernize your outlets.

Lighting delays

If you notice a delay between flicking a switch and the light coming on, the switch might be getting old. This usually happens when the electrical contacts get worn from years of use. The good news is that is generally isn’t a fire hazard, but the switch will still die soon. So be sure to call us to schedule a replacement.

5 Electrical Upgrades to Add to Your Iowa Home

5 Electrical Upgrades to Add to Your Iowa Home

  • Electrical
electrical upgrades in Iowa by Integra

Your home’s electrical system might not be something you think about too much. However, don’t you think it’s worth it to keep it running at its best? If your home’s electricity is unreliable, you may struggle to live comfortably and are at risk of electrical disasters. Remodeling your Iowa home can give you a great opportunity to give your electrical system much-needed upgrades. Improving your home’s electrical system is a big step in improving your comfort, efficiency, and safety.

Here are five electrical upgrades that can improve any Iowa home:

Electrical panel upgrades

Our current demands for electricity can often be too much for older electrical panels. A modern energy-efficient version of an appliance can still use a lot more energy than an older model. By upgrading your electrical panel, you can improve your home’s electrical capacity for electronics and other upgrades. Also, upgrading the electrical panel will give you a good opportunity to swap out any damaged or old wiring.

Smart electronics

Smart electronics, like hardwired smoke detectors, are a simple yet effective way to improve your home’s electrical system. Their ability to be programmed and interface with other smart electronics makes them very useful for any home. Hardwired smoke detectors, for instance, work as an entire system so if one detects a fire, all of them go off.

New wiring

Older wiring, like older electric panels, can have trouble keeping up with modern electrical demands. Also, older wiring is prone to fraying and other damage. This damage putting your family at risk of electrocution and your home at risk for electrical fires. Because of this, rewiring your home is a great way to ensure your home’s safety.

Whole-home surge protection

Whole-home surge protection consists of a system of surge protectors strategically placed to keep your electronics safe from power surges. This system can protect your electrical system from all kinds of power surges, whether they come from severe storms or the tiny ones from your electronics working.

Extra outlets

Outlets are what let you use your electronics by connecting them to your electrical system. Not having enough means you’ll have to switch around plugs or make tough decisions on what you want to be plugged in. Also, you might want preexisting plugs to get some service because they’re getting damaged. Whether you need new outlets or simply repairs, we can provide!

5 Reasons to Get LED Lighting for your Iowa Home

5 Reasons to Get LED Lighting for your Iowa Home

  • Electrical
led lighting in Iowa by Integra

LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights are a type of lighting that is becoming more popular in the residential market. The reason for their rising popularity is that their technology is becoming cheaper to produce yet more reliable and effective. Today’s commercial models are more energy-efficient, last longer, and take less maintenance than conventional light bulbs. The Department of Energy estimates that by 2027, widespread LED usage could save about 347 terawatt-hours per day, which equals a savings of about $30 trillion dollars at current electricity prices. Reasons like these provide good examples of why you should get LED lighting for your Iowa home.

Here are five reasons to change to LED lighting for your Iowa home:

They’re environmentally friendlier

While older lights have their share of disposal issues, LED lights are much more simple to dispose of. Fluorescent lights, for instance, creates light by running electricity through mercury vapor. By doing this, the lamp creates ultraviolet light that makes the phosphor-coated lamp glow. However, the mercury in the lamp means you can’t simply dispose of it. Instead, you have to take special precautions when it’s time to get rid of them. With LED lights, you can simply recycle them without any sort of special considerations.

They’re more energy-efficient

LED lighting uses about half the electricity used by traditional incandescent, halogen, and fluorescent lighting. This means LED lights can save plenty of money on electricity costs. The savings can be even greater when replacing lights that are on most of the day. A major reason for LED lighting’s efficiency is because it’s a directional light that only brightens up a semicircle, as opposed to the 360° range of normal lights. Directional lights help cut back on wasted energy, but can be bundled together to provide the same spherical coverage of a classic light bulb.

Great CRI

Color Rendering Index (CRI) measures a man-made light’s ability to show an object’s natural color compared to natural light. Low CRI lights, like sodium vapor lamps, often make objects look a yellow/orange color. However, LED lights have a CRI ranging from about 65 to 95, which is considered excellent. If you’re designing your outdoor lighting, your lighting’s CRI rating can be an important consideration.

They’re safer

A common hazard with most lights is that they produce a lot of heat. To compare, LED lights emit very little heat while incandescent light bulbs turn over 90% of their energy into heat. This means that not only does about 10% of their energy actually go to lighting up your home, but they can also get dangerously hot. Also, LED lights use less energy and can work on low-voltage electrical systems. These systems tend to be safer in case something goes wrong.

They have long lifespans

Some of the highest-quality LED lights can take around 30-50 thousand hours of usage. Compared to the 1,000-hour lifespan of incandescent light bulbs, this is a huge jump. Even compact fluorescent lighting can’t compare, with a lifespan of only 8,000-10,000 hours. Also, it’s worth noting that LED lights don’t suddenly “burn out” like normal light bulbs. Instead, when they near the end of their lifespan, LED bulbs will instead start to dim, giving you heads-up that you need to replace your lights. LED lights can help you make your home’s lighting lower maintenance.

7 Signs You Should Upgrade Your Circuit Breaker

7 Signs You Should Upgrade Your Circuit Breaker

  • Electrical

A circuit breaker is a key part of any safe electrical system. Their job is to shut off the circuit if something goes wrong, protecting the system from a short circuit or overload. However, like every other part of your home, it’ll get worn down and eventually need an upgrade. But how do you know when your circuit breaker needs an upgrade? Integra Electrical can help you recognize when you should arrange for a circuit breaker upgrade in your Iowa home.

Here are seven signs you need to get a circuit breaker upgrade:

Still using fuses

Older homes may still use fuses to protect against short circuits. Homes used circuit breakers back in the day when we used a lot less electricity. This means that fuses generally can’t handle as much electricity as a circuit breaker and should be upgraded.

Heated components

When you touch any part of your electrical panel, it should all be around the same non-descript temperature. However, failing circuits can make the area around them hot to the touch. If you notice any heat from a tripped circuit breaker, call an emergency electrician before you reset the breaker.

Resetting troubles

Like generic light switches, circuit breaker switches have two options: on and off. When resetting a circuit, you simply have to flick the switch back on. However, if there’s a problem, it might flick back immediately, stay in the center, or refuse to budge from the off position. Any of these occurrences should have you calling an electrician.

Inexplicable tripping

Circuit breakers often trip when the electrical load becomes too great for their circuit. However, sometimes they might trip when they have a completely safe load. These kinds of trips hint that you have a bad breaker.

Frequent tripping

An obvious sign that your circuit breaker needs upgrading is if it trips up frequently. When specific circuits are tripping frequently, that may be a sign of a bigger issue. You should consult with one of our electricians to find out what the exact issue is.

Evidence of electrical fires

Improperly grounded or contained electricity can make sparks fly as electricity jumps between components. If this is causing your circuit breaker to trip, you might notice singe marks on your breaker or acrid smells. Hold off on resetting the circuits and call us to take a look.

Old or damaged wiring

Old or damaged wiring tends to cause problems with any electronics they’re connected to. Lights can flicker, plugging in appliances may result in an electric shock, and you might smell burning around your appliances. All of these are signs you should call a professional before your home is seriously damaged. It may be a good idea to ask about rewiring.

5 Reasons to Get Recessed Lighting in Iowa

5 Reasons to Get Recessed Lighting in Iowa

  • Electrical
recessed lighting in Iowa by Integra

When it comes to what makes up a room in your home, there are many different things to consider. One of these factors is the lighting. A room’s lighting can change a lot about how a room looks, works and contributes to a house’s overall value on the market. One kind of lighting, recessed lighting, is a kind that is implanted in a room’s ceiling to avoid hanging units. While they aren’t for every room, recessed lighting can give a sleeker look to a room. At Integra, we can give you some reasons to consider asking us about getting recessed lighting for your Iowa home.

Here are five reasons to consider getting recessed lighting for your Iowa home:

Waterproof

Recessed lighting is one of the few types of lighting you can purchase that is waterproof. Granted, this won’t be important most of the time. However, this feature makes recessed lighting one of the few types of lighting that can be used in shower stalls. This also makes it more useful in bathrooms in general. Also, the casing used for recessed lighting makes it more resistant to dust.

Perennial style

Style and fashion can seem like a complex subject that has no rhyme or reason. Fortunately, recessed lighting, unlike track or monorail lighting, is effectively trend-proof. The sleek, modern look of recessed lighting has never truly been in style. Consequentially, these lights will never go out of style. You won’t have to worry about guests or house buyers considering your lights tacky.

Larger-looking rooms via wall washing

Wall washing is a lighting effect where you can cast more light around the room by using the correct trim. To properly make use of wall washing, you need a professional designer’s eye and the right parts. Both of these are things we here at Integra can provide. With our help, wall washing can make your rooms look bigger and brighter.

Good for low ceilings and small rooms

Recessed lighting not only makes rooms look bigger, but it can make them physically bigger. Normal hanging light fixtures can take up precious space in smaller areas and hit you in the head if you’re not careful. In rooms where space is a premium, such as basements, having lights that don’t hang down can give you more room.

Complete coverage

Normal ceiling lights in the center of a room can keep the center well-lit. However, this lighting has difficulty reaching the edges of the room, leaving the edges looking dimmer. With recessed lighting, you can carefully arrange your lighting to get complete coverage of your room.

7 Signs Your Home Needs Rewiring in Iowa

7 Signs Your Home Needs Rewiring in Iowa

  • Electrical
rewiring in Iowa by Integra

In a study by the Electrical Safety Foundation, it’s reported that about 51,000 fires are caused by faulty wiring every year. As wires get older, they fray and become more likely to suffer faults that can cause severe damage. In fact, it’s likely that faulty wires can cause major fires. The best way to avoid this issue is by rewiring your Iowa home. Rewiring replaces all of the old, at-risk wires with fresh wiring. The big question, however, is when you should call for a rewiring. Integra Electrical can tell you when you should be calling us to protect your home.

Here are seven signs that your Iowa home should get rewiring:

Persistent burning smells

If you’re smelling a constant burning and can’t find a reason for it, you might want to check your wires. Burning smells are a common sign of wiring in dire need of replacement. If you smell the burning, turn off the power at the circuit and call us immediately. Failure to do so can result in an electrical fire.

Aluminum wiring

About two million homes between 1965 and 1973 used aluminum for their electrical wiring instead of the standard copper. This short usage window is due to aluminum being a bad material for electrical wiring. Aluminum wiring is known to be more prone to failure and damage than copper wiring, all issues that can cause electrical fires. If you live in an older home, check your wires to see if they’re aluminum. You can tell if you have aluminum wires because they have ‘AL’ written on the wire jacket.

Frequent circuit breaker trips

Circuit breakers and fuses both protect your home from power surges. When they detect more energy than your system can handle, they trip or burn out to protect your system. This helps prevent electrical fires and damage to your electronics. If your system is frequently tripping the circuit breaker, then your wiring might be too worn to handle the load. Of course, there are other reasons your circuit breaker is tripping too much. Maybe an appliance is faulty or you’ve added something new that adds too much to the system. You can figure out what the problem is by using a circuit breaker tester.

Electrical shocks from your cords

Sometimes you may get an electrical shock when plugging or unplugging an appliance from an outlet. When that happens, you should call us immediately. That’s a sign of faulty wiring and the shocks they give can be very dangerous to you and your family.

Lighting issues

Flickering lights are a common sign of faulty wiring. Oftentimes you’ll only see one or a few lights flickering. In those cases, you likely just have a bulb that’s bad or needs tightening. However, if every light is flickering, then your wiring is the problem. Another problem wiring can cause with your lighting is bulbs burning in their socket despite being the right model. This is usually when the fixture can’t handle the bulb’s wattage due to wire wear. Like the flickering lights, this problem can be solved by rewiring your home.

Charred and discolored outlets and switches

Switches and outlets that look like they’ve been burnt are a bad sign. Loose connections behind your outlets and switches can arc and spark. These can cause tiny fires or electrical burns that can show up on the outlet and switch covers. However, sometimes the problem can be deeper in the walls, preventing you from seeing the burn marks the sparks make.

Two-prong outlets

In more modern buildings, you’ll likely notice that outlets and the electronics they use have three prongs. The third prong that forms the “mouth” of the outlet has a grounding wire. When the load gets too much for the first two prongs, the grounding wire takes the load and grounds it safely into the earth. Older homes often have outlets with only two prongs. Not only is this dangerous, but more modern electronics may not be able to plug into them.
